Digital Devices & Internet Access Update (January 2021)

Dear Parent/Carer,

Please see the updated information from the Department for Education in relation to access to digital devices and internet access in light of the current national lockdown.

Internet Access

The DfE is offering support in two ways: additional mobile data and 4G routers.

Additional Mobile Data

  • For mobile phone internet access only. Does not allow users to send text messages or make phone calls.
  • Participating mobile networks: Three, Smarty, Virgin, EE, Tesco and Sky (others may join at a later date).
  • Available to families without broadband access at home.
  • To register interest please tell your young person’s Form Tutor.
  • We will need to collect the following information:
    • Account holder’s name
    • Mobile Number of the device
    • Mobile Network (see list above)
    • Pay monthly or pay as you go
  • What next: school will send information to the DfE and if approved the mobile number provided will receive a text message with further information.

4G Routers

  • Can be used for internet access on laptops, computers, tablets and smartphones.
  • Available to families who do not have broadband internet access at home.
  • To register interest please tell your young person’s Form Tutor.
  • What next: school will send information to the DfE and if approved routers will be sent to school to distribute to families.

Digital Devices

According to the DfE, eligibility for a free laptop is based on:

  1. Children without a digital device in their household.
  2. Children whose only available device is a Smartphone.
  3. Children with a single device in their household that is being shared with more than one other family member.

In the autumn term, we collected information from families about their need for a digital device to support with remote learning.  If your circumstances have changed since the autumn term, and you now require a laptop to support with remote learning, please tell your young person’s Form Tutor.

Please note: it is not guaranteed your request for a laptop and/or internet access from the DfE will be successful due to the exceptionally high demand across the country. Oak Grove College will submit all requests to the DfE but we do not make the final decision.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact with me by emailing homelearning@oakgrovecollege.org.uk

Yours sincerely,

Tyler Gee
