Our Careers Programme builds on OGC’s holistic, person centred approach and recognises that outcomes for our students will vary significantly, according to their needs and level of achievement; ranging from full-time paid employment to full-time care and supported living.

The Careers Lead ensures that the Careers Programme is established, maintained and developed, that work experience takes place as conditions allow, that PD modules are delivered and that monitoring is kept up to date. The Careers Lead also reports to the Head, SLT and the governing body, regarding progress for students and for the college in achieving the Gatsby Benchmarks.

The lead for PD has the responsibility to ensure the development and delivery of the PD (Careers) programme to all students.

The Lead for the Sixth Form (curriculum) has responsibility for oversight of the Sixth Form curriculum in respect of the delivery of Careers, Work Related Learning and Enterprise.

Structure for subject-based learners:

Year 7

  • Students are baselined to determine their individual needs and begin their learning journey at OGC, focusing on building core skills that will support them longer-term in developing independence and accessing further education, training and employment, as appropriate.
  • Most students will have the opportunity to take part in transition activities which focus on communication and teamwork skills.
  • Subject-based learners will follow an emotional literacy (EL) programme which will focus in part on developing their capacity for resilience.
  • Subject-based learners will complete a module in work related learning as part of their Personal Development (PD) programme which introduces them to the concepts of personal qualities and skills, how these are linked to employment and how they can be developed.
Year 8
  • Students continue to develop resilience and self-management skills through the EL programme.
  • Subject-based learners will complete a module in work related learning as part of their Personal Development (PD) programme which introduces them to the concepts of personal qualities and skills, how these are linked to employment and how they can be developed.
Year 9

  • Students apply and develop their ability to reflect and self-assess in preparing for their annual review meeting which focuses on the transition from Key Stage 3 to 4.
  • In preparation for making their option choices for Year 10, students have an individual guidance interview and the opportunity to attend Year 9 Options Evening. They are encouraged to consider where their chosen subjects might take them post-16 and the implications for future choices and possible employment.
Year 10
  • Students complete a Work Related Learning module in PD focusing on understanding the local labour market, entry requirements for different areas of employment and developing the necessary knowledge, skills and qualities.
  • Students gain insight into further education, vocational learning and the workplace through attending Greater Brighton Metropolitan (Northbrook) College (GMBC), Brinsbury College, Brighton Forward and The Sand Project where the focus is on developing work related skills in a café environment.
  • Students have the opportunity to participate in virtual encounters with local employers, gain insight into applications processes and develop understanding of apprenticeships through the ASK programme.
  • Students will be invited to a ‘Transition Evening’ in school attended by local FE and post-16 providers and local employers and will be offered the possibility of attending local careers events both in and out of school as they arise.
  • Students opting for Personal Development and Employability Skills in Year 10 and 11 will have the opportunity to develop their work related skills in areas such as communication, teamwork and running an enterprise project. This course is accredited through the Prince’s Trust.
Year 11
  • The focus in Year 11 is on making informed choices with an eye on transition to post-16 provision. They will explore further options for Year 12 and beyond, action planning for specific goals and explore careers related resources.
  • Year 11 students will complete year two of their GBMC/Brinsbury/Brighton Forward/SAND Project rotation.
  • They will benefit from the support outlined above through the ASK programme and consider different role models among young people in employment.
  • Students will have the opportunity to undergo an individual guidance interview with someone other than their teacher based on their choices for post-16 and areas of interest.
  • Students will be invited to a ‘Transition Evening’ in school attended by local FE and post-16 providers and local employers and will be offered the possibility of attending local careers events both in and out of school as they arise.
Koa and Sixth
The Koa Curriculum develops life and work skills by focusing on key skills of shopping, cooking and safety. This involves accessing the community and experiencing the real workplace environment of shops and leisure services. Students also work on road crossing skills and accessing public transport.

Koa students develop their work skills through the weekly tuck shop. All students have the opportunity to assist in operating or in using the Tuck Shop. Every second half of the autumn term Koa students are involved in Enterprise. They plan and create items to be sold at the Christmas Market which is opened to families to come and be customers.

Koa students have a Transition programme to Sixth form in the last month of Yr11.

Sixth Form
Students further develop their life and work skills through shopping, cooking and regular travel training on public transport.

They also have a choice of learning options where they can experience developing interests in particular fields such as DT, The Arts, Gardening.

Weekly Work Related Learning sessions occur where students learn to develop employability skills such as teamwork through undertaking work based activities such as producing radio programmes, constructing pathways, running a Café.

Students work on two key annual Enterprise events in the school Calendar – The Winter Fair in December and the Plant Sale in May. Both events are open to members of the public and advertised in the wider local community.

Students and their families are closely supported in their next steps. As well as running a weekly link course to Brinsbury College, Yr13 and Yr14 students undertake visits to other appropriate adult services either as part of their curriculum or on day release.

Personal Development and Support

Students are also prepared for life after Oak Grove through tutor support. In addition to things like preparing CVs and evaluating likes and dislikes, tutors will advise students and their support network on possible next steps through Annual Reviews, guest speakers and visits to local adult provisions. There is also a yearly Transition ‘Fair’ where a great many adult providers from West Sussex and beyond have a stall and are available to discuss options.

After students have left there is annual monitoring to track their progress. This will inform OGC as to the effectiveness and suitability of local routes to employment and help create better guidance for the future.


An apprenticeship is a paid job.

Alongside on-the-job training, apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours completing classroom-based learning with a college, university or training provider which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

An apprenticeship includes:

  • paid employment with holiday leave
  • hands-on-experience in a sector/role of interest
  • at least 20% off-the-job training
  • formal assessment which leads to a nationally recognised qualification

Year 10 Subject Based Learners have the opportunity to learn more about Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Internships delivered by the ASK Programme.

Links with FE Colleges

Students are given the opportunity to attend one day link courses. By building in some time at an FE college the students become familiar with the structure and surroundings as well as gaining an insight into possible courses available to them when they leave Oak Grove.

In Yr 10 and 11, students in Marvel, Avatar and Da Vinci spend one day a week at GB Met, Brinsbury College, Brighton Forward and the SAND Project to enable students to start to manage and cope with transitions and be better informed when it comes to making choices for Post 16 and 19 provision.
